Z-DRIVE

(i) Veth-Z-Drive en Veth-L-Drive
The Veth-Z-Drive gives full thrust power over a circle of 360°, thus enabling a maximum manoeuvrability of the vessel. The Veth-L-Drive is a good choice when an installation is driven electrically or hydraulically. In this case the engine is mounted vertically but without the upper gear-box with the free-wheel clutch. The integrated steering wheels, however, are the same as in the Veth-Z-Drive. Over the years Veth Propulsion BV has obtained special expertise with Diesel electric installations. A frequency control can be supplied together with the elektromotor.
(ii) Counter Rotating
Apart from the standard design Veth Propulsion BV offers a counter rotating system (CR). The CR Veth-Z-Drives present a completely new dimension of efficient low-noise propulsion. The CR unit combines high efficiency and small propeller diameters with reduced noise emission. The power is distributed over two propellers which results in a better performance. Within the CR unit both propellers rotate in opposite directions, so that the second propeller compensates the whirling of the water caused by the first propeller. As a consequence rotation loss is minimized with maximum efficiency gained from the available power and propeller diameters.

(iii) Retractable
The Veth-Z-Drives, in this case, are completely retractable within the ship. By means of an ingenious arch-claw clutch system, the engine can be completely detached from the driving unit by remote control. These types of installation are usually linked to a Dynamic Positioning system and work under the most difficult circumstances.

(iv) Deck-mounted
As with all applications, the deck-mounted installation can also be supplied, if required, a variable height mechanism in order to facilitate the adjustment of the height of the propeller.
With the use of well designed, sound proofed engine boxes, Veth Propulsion has created compact designed propulsion units.
BOW THRUSTERS
With the help of a horizontally mounted propeller, the water is drawn up from underneath the vessel. Through a 360° rotating drum the water is bent 90° and guided into one or two channels making the vessel manoeuvrable.
Main reasons for choosing a Veth-Jet bow thruster:
• Maximum thrust at minimum draught.
• The propeller turns in 1 direction (maximum efficiency).
• Gives thrust during sailing.
• No protruding parts under the vessel.
• The 3 and 4 channel system can also be used as auxiliary propulsion or brake.
• High thrust: about 11 kg./kW.
• No reverse clutch is required.
• Possibility to change propeller without docking.
TUNNEL THRUSTERS
For ships requiring maximum transverse force, the Veth tunnel thruster has repeatedly proved to be the best choice. It consists of a tail-end with a vertically mounted NiAlBz propeller with built-in reduction. The up-to-date design guarantees maximum operational reliability. Besides the fixed pitch tunnel thrusters, controllable pitch units can also be delivered on request. The blades are changed in pitch hydraulically.
COMPACT-JET
The Veth-Compact-Jet is a thruster, meant for propulsion, but can also be used as a bow thruster. An important advantage is that the Compact-Jet is very appropriate for shallow draught conditions. And as there are no protruding parts underneath the vessel, this thruster is also very suitable to make flat-bottom crafts, such as barges, self propelled.
When the requirements for a low sound level are very important, as for example in passenger vessels, the Compact-Jet can also be used as a bow thruster. Thanks to its double construction, the sound level is limited to a minimum.
STEERING GRID
With the help of a horizontally mounted propeller, the water is drawn up from underneath the vessel. After which the water is guided through an hydro dynamically shaped housing to a 360 degrees steerable grid.
A major benefit of the Veth-Steering grid is that with a minimal draught the maximum thrust can be achieved without parts protruding through the ships hull. An additional advantage of the horizontally mounted propeller is that also when the ship is sailing the thruster still develops a considerable thrust. This is realized because of the upwards pressure of the water. The propeller has only 1 turning direction and therefore can be optimized. A reversing clutch is not necessary.
